On June 5th, Southwest Petroleum University authorities held a meeting celebrating Academician Luo Pingya’s 80th birthday and anniversary of his 59-year Lecturing. University leaders, representatives of petroleum industry, entrepreneurs, alumni representatives, lecturers and students gathered together to recall the outstanding contributions made by Academician Luo Pingya to China's petroleum and petrochemical industry and to Southwest Petroleum University. President Zhao Jinzhou chaired the meeting.
In 1958, Luo Pingya was enrolled at Southwest Petroleum University as one of the first undergraduates. In 1961, he was sent to Sichuan University for further study as a teacher. In 1990, he was appointed President of Southwest Petroleum Institute, and in 1995, he was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Luo said, “All my achievements are attributed to the university, which provided me the opportunities and platforms. I grew up along with the university, and it was Southwest Petroleum University that cultivated me.”
It is precisely because of this special affection that Academician Luo devoted his youth to the university and exerted his utmost efforts for the development of the university.
Today, at the age of 80, Luo is still working at the university. “I want to do a little bit more,” he says.
On behalf of the University, Zhao Zhengwen, Secretary of the Party Committee, and Zhao Jinzhou, President of the University, extended their high respect and best wishes to Academician Luo Pingya on his 80th birthday and presented him with a birthday gift.
In the speech, Zhao Zhengwei said, “Academician Luo is a banner of Southwest Petroleum University. He harbors a consistent passion and the most sincere dedication for academic research and the cause of education.”
President Zhao Jinzhou said, “Academician Luo is a role model respected by the faculty, students and staff of SWPU. He regards academics as his life and education as his own duty. He has made fruitful achievements in scientific research and cultivated a large number of outstanding talents. His persistent pursuit of excellence, indefatigable dedication to education and his simple and noble personality have deeply influenced and inspired every one of us.”
