On January 13th, overseas student Muhammad Shahab Khan fixed a piece of plastic blank to the chuck, adjusted the position of the turning tool, and was about to start cutting. Today he will complete vocational training at the Engineering Training Center.
Shahab comes from Pakistan. He is now a sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering. Along with him, there are another 51 overseas students from School of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Computer Science, School of Electrical Engineering and Information.
Engineering training is listed in international students’ programs, and all international students majoring in science and technology are required to participate. The industrial training center arranged for them to learn safety knowledge, as well as basic knowledge and skill training of lathe, fitter, CNC milling, 3D printing and so forth.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 82 international students were stranded abroad this semester. The Engineering training center arranged online courses for them and hired Luo Li, a lecturer from the School of Sciences, to help train the faculty.
Since 2018, SWPU Engineering Training Center has trained a total of 345 international students. With 100% attendance rate, their training receives positive feedbacks. Freddy Francis, a Petroleum-Engineering junior from Papua New Guinea, wrote in his training summary: “These were the most memorable two weeks of my life. This training is really close to the essence of engineering.”
