Fault-controlled fluid flow in shallow brittle crust: impacts on hydrocarbon/geothermal fluids migration

Lecture:Fault-controlled fluid flow in shallow brittle crust: impacts on hydrocarbon/geothermal fluids migration

Lecturer:Dr. Luca Smeraglia (Senior Researcher at the National Research Council of Italy)

Time:10:00-11:30, Dec. 6th(Friday)

Venue:D404, Mingbianlou Building

Bio.:Luca Smeraglia is Senior Researcher at the National Research Council of Italy. He received his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees at Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) in 2011, 2013, and 2017 respectively, and his post-doctoral research at the Université de Franche-Comté (France) between 2017 and 2019. His research focuses on tectonic geology, especially on the mechanism of rupture activity and its response to fluid activity, and he has carried out a number of innovative studies on paleoseismicity, history of rupture activity, history of fluid activity, and the interaction between faults and fluids, and he has carried out extensive research on the rupture systems in many regions, including Europe and the Middle East. In the past 10 years, he has published more than 30 SCI papers, of which 20 have been first-authored. Dr. Luca Smeraglia has published papers as first author in the authoritative journals ofEarth and Planetary Science letters(3), Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth (2),Tectonics(2),Journal of Structural Geology(5). As an outstanding young scholar in the field of tectonic geology, he has actively participated in academic exchanges, attended 20 academic conferences, and was invited to give keynote speeches at 4 conferences.

Abstract:This talk will encompass three regional case studies in Italy, France, and Germany where the role of faulting and seismic activity was fundamental in hydrocarbon/geothermal fluid migration. Specifically, the role of carbonate faults and associated damage zone are investigated though field, microstructural, and geochemical methods to unravel fluid flow circulation in faults and their role as permeable and impermeable barriers. Finally, recommendations will be proposed when dealing with carbonate faults during hydrocarbon or geothermal exploration.
