Lin Tao obtained his Doctoral Degree from the University of Wyoming in 1990, and was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1989, and has been a professor since 2001. He is an expert in computational mathematics and scientific computing. His research interests involve numerical methods for solving partial differential equations and integral-differential equations, particularly in the field of immersed finite element methods for interface problems and their applications, which have achieved groundbreaking research results.

Immersed finite element (IFE) methods offer the flexibility to employ a mesh independent of the interface where a partial differential equation (PDE) model either changes its coefficients or its type. This presentation will show how this particular attribute of IFE methods provides distinct advantages in numerous applications. We will begin with a concise introduction to IFE methods and subsequently delve into three representative applications:

(1) Interface problems involving a single physics model in a domain comprising multiple materials.

(2) Interface problems for multiple physics models, each located in distinct sub-domains within a simulation domain.

(3) Interface inverse problems for the identification or determination of material interfaces based on boundary measurements within a simulation domain.
