Abstract:In this presentation we will first introduce the immersed finite elements to efficiently solve elliptic interface PDEs on structured meshes. Then two applications to the problems of charging in space will be discussed: the ion thruster and the electrostatic levitation of lunar dust. The latter one is one of the greatest inhibitors to a nominal operation on the moon. Finally, the immersed finite elements will be extended to a moving interface PDE for more applications.

About the lecturer: He Xiaoming, associate professor of Missouri University of Science and Technology, United States. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Sichuan University in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree. He obtained the doctor’s degree in Virginia Tech in 2009. He was a postdoc in Florida State University from 2009 to 2010, an assistant professor of Missouri University of Science and Technology from 2010 to 2016, and became an associate professor and was tenured in 2016. He is an editorial board member of International Journal of Numerical Analysis&Modeling and a guest editor of several internationally recognized academic journals. He was the first president of SIAM Central States Section from 2014 to 2016 and the president of the organizing committee of the first two annual meetings.

Professor He is mainly engaged in computational sciences and engineering. His fields of study mainly include interface problems, computational fluid mechanics, stochastic partial differential equations, nonlinear partial differential equations, feedback control problems, and computational electromagnetics. He has combined computational mathematics with engineering applications and made important contributions to scientific computations and applications.
