Asymmetric hydrogenation of unfunctionalized olefins have attracted considerable interest recently and chiral Ir-P,N complexes have been found to be extremely useful catalytic precursors for the asymmetric hydrogenation of minimally functionalized di- and tri-substituted olefins. However, besides the development of highly enantioselective protocols, regioselectivity, or the ability to hydrogenate only one out of several olefins in a certain substrate is still a generally unsolved task.

Herein we describe a new and efficient regio- and highly enantioselective hydrogenation of 1,4- and 1,5-disubstituted 1,4-cyclohexadienes resulting in chiral, silyl protected enol ethers. A variety of substituents were tolerated on both the meta and para positions demonstrating the broad scope of the reaction.

Introduction:Stockholm University is one of Sweden’s largest universities, and is a central institution of Sweden’s higher education and scientific researches. Its rich academic atmosphere has brought 6 Nobel Prize winners. The discipline of chemistry is highly reputed, ranking the 15thin the world.

Professor Pher G. Andersson has led his research team in the past 16 years engaging in the development of high-efficiency and high-selectivity asymmetric hydrogenation. They have contributed to the field of asymmetric hydrogenation with innovative and systematic researches. So far, professor Pher G. Andersson has published more than 160 academic papers and monographs. 32 papers are published inJ. Am. Chem. Soc., a top-ranking international chemistry publication. His work of asymmetric hydrogenation has received attention from peers across the world, with more than 9,000 citations and an h index of 56. Because of professor Pher G. Andersson’s outstanding contribution to the field of asymmetric hydrogenation, he was awarded the AstraZeneca Prize“Creativity in Organic Synthesis”(2014), and Sweden’s Ulla och Stig Holmquists vetenskapliga pris (science prize) (2015).
